Message in a Bottle

Message in a Bottle

The other day, I was listening to my Apple music shuffle on random play when a song by The Police played. The song is “Message in a Bottle,” and it really spoke to me at that moment.

Just a castaway
An island lost at sea
Another lonely day
With no one here but me

I feel alone so often. The verse is a nearly perfect encapsulation of my mindset when I hear this old song by The Police.

More loneliness
Than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair

This is the verse where my reality shifts away from a strict interpretation of the lyrics. I used to feel exactly that way, but therapy saved me before I fell over the ledge and into the pit of despair.

I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle
[Message in a bottle]

A cry for help always seemed to be a sign of weakness that I refused to consider. Isolation kept me alone and afraid because those qualities made me an easy target for people to take advantage of me. The message refers to a secret hope that I wasn’t all alone.

A year has passed since I wrote my note
But I should have known this right from the start

To cross reference a second song by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, “The Waiting is the hardest part.” I gave up after my first attempt to improve myself, the fear was crippling and I decided that it wasn’t worth the risk anymore.

Only hope can keep me together
Love can mend your life
But love can break your heart

This is the nadir of despair when everything aligns against me. I hope that my luck will change. When I thought I found love, it turned out that I was the only one who felt that way. The others were exploiters and cheaters who cheapened the thought of love.

I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle
[Message in a bottle
Oh, message in a bottle
Message in a bottle]

A cry for help always seemed to be a sign of weakness that I refused to consider. Isolation kept me alone and afraid because those qualities made me an easy target for people to take advantage of me. The message refers to a secret hope that I wasn’t all alone.

Walked out this morning
Don't believe what I saw
A hundred billion bottles
Washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
A hundred billion casatways
Looking for a home

This verse is self-explanatory. It recalls the time when I first learned that there were plenty of other people who felt the same fears and rejection that I had experienced.

I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle
[Message in a bottle
Message in a bottle
Message in a bottle]
Sending out an SOS...

A cry for help always seemed to be a sign of weakness that I refused to consider. Isolation kept me alone and afraid because those qualities made me an easy target for people to take advantage of me. The message refers to a secret hope that I wasn’t all alone.
