An Old Post from my backlog
When I read about Elon Musk taking over Twitter just cower a week ago, I was rather disappointed with the news. I don’t believe that someone like Elon Musk can be trusted with something like Twitter. He has a history of siding with right-wing extremist groups and politicians, which I do not after with at all. Personally, I believe that he purchased twitter with the express goal od limiting and/or eliminating speech, thoughts, and ideas that he is personally opposed to, not to mention promoting his own radical agenda.
When news of the takeover became final, I immediately began searching for an alternative to twitter and I found Mastodon. Mastodon is open source and decentralized, it is not owned by6 a person or a corporation and I like that. I signed up for an account and immediately began two explore the new environment.
The best way I can describe Mastodon is to compare not to the old Google+ platform that died several years when Google pulled the plug on it. Mastodon is not run like twitter, no algorithm determines what trends and what doesn’t. Mastodon doesn’t always scream for attention like twitter does. Most import, Mastodon is a much quieter and nicer online community. There are nob screaming bots promoting agendas, or selling porn or merchandise.
I almost dropped my twitters account that first day on Mastodon. I am keeping it only to see if I can coax some real friends over to Mastodon from twitter before I sign off for good. I went from religiously checking my twitter feed multiple times per hour to trying to remember to check in once a day only to see if one of my friends has responded. On Mastodon, I don’t have to be o line constantly, the app notifies me when one of my new friends posts something to me.
The Mastodon experience is calming and pleasant, unlike the screaming and chaos from Twitter. I already prefer Mastodon over Twitter, and I see no reason to go back to Twitter in the future. I hop that some or all of my friends will make the switch, but it is their decision to make.
